                         A beautiful simple etch carved wood piece.  This was an attic find and I know relatively little about it but it is beautifully simple and elegant.

The details of the artist and date are on the back of the piece.  It is made from some kind of manufactured wood (possibly MDF) with plywood on the front that has been carved.  It has been lacquered a lot.  

It is reminiscent of the painting Madonna and Child.  Madonna and Child was painted by one of the most influential artists of the late 13th and early 14th century, Duccio di Buoninsegna. This iconic image of the Madonna and Child, seen throughout the history of western art, holds significant value in terms of stylistic innovations of religious subject matter that would continue to evolve for centuries.

From the origin of the writing on the back it feels like an icon.  An icon (from Ancient Greek εἰκών (eikṓn) ‘image, resemblance’) is a religious work of art, most commonly a painting, in the cultures of the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, the Roman Catholic, and certain Eastern Catholic churches. They are not simply artworks; “an icon is a sacred image used in religious devotion”. The most common subjects include Christ, Mary, saints and angels. Although especially associated with portrait-style images concentrating on one or two main figures, the term also covers most religious images in a variety of artistic media produced by Eastern Christianity, including narrative scenes, usually from the Bible or the lives of saints.

Our home in Renfrewshire is called Ben Seillean. Ben Seillean means hill of the bees in Scots Gaelic. We love bees and are investing in making the perfect garden to nurture our bees through the year.
