My Scottish Garden in June

June is a busy time for gardening in Scotland, as the warm weather starts to settle in and the garden comes into full swing. Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just starting out, there's plenty to keep you busy this month. So, let's get our hands dirty!

When it comes to planting, June is a great time to add some annuals to your garden. These are plants that complete their life cycle in just one season, but they pack a punch in terms of colour and impact. Some great options include Sunflowers, Marigolds, and Zinnias, which will add a burst of sunshine to your garden with their bold and bright blooms.

Another great option for June is to plant some herbs. Not only are herbs great for cooking, but they also look fantastic in the garden and help to attract beneficial insects. Some of the best herbs to plant in June include Basil, Sage, and Thyme. They're also easy to care for and will keep your garden smelling wonderful all summer long.

In addition to planting, there are a few other tasks to keep you busy in the garden in June. One of the most important is weeding. While it's not the most glamorous of tasks, it's essential to keep on top of the weeds, as they can quickly take over your garden and choke out your plants.

Another task that's important in June is deadheading. This is the process of removing spent blooms from your plants, which encourages them to produce more flowers. Whether you're deadheading roses, daisies, or any other type of flowering plant, it's an essential part of keeping your garden looking its best.

Along with taking care of the garden, it's also important to take some time to enjoy it. Whether you're lounging in the sunshine, admiring the blooms, or simply enjoying the fresh air, there's nothing quite like the feeling of being surrounded by nature. As the Scottish poet Robert Burns once wrote, "The flowers of the forest, that foucht aye the foremost."

Another important task in June is to water your plants. Whether you're using rain barrels, installing a drip irrigation system, or simply using a hose, it's essential to make sure that your plants are getting enough water. This is especially true during the warmer months, when the soil can start to dry out more quickly.

Finally, it's worth mentioning the importance of mulching. This is the process of adding a layer of organic material, such as bark chips, to the surface of your soil, which helps to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Whether you're mulching your flower beds, vegetable garden, or anywhere else in your garden, it's a great way to improve the health of your soil and keep your plants looking their best.

So, there you have it, a few ideas for what to plant and do in your garden in Scotland in June. Whether you're looking to add a pop of color, grow your own herbs, or simply enjoy some time outside, there's something for everyone. So, roll up your sleeves and get gardening!
